I wanted to revisit this thread as we are getting closer to that time again. ;D Also, to comment on this post by summerhawk in another thread. I am excited to try my hand at crossing this year! I will be breeding PL mothers x RL pollen doners and then choosing the RL seedlings of which to grow and save seed... I might try a RL x RL or a PL x PL if I am feeling confident:) Summer, you really shouldn't look at your crosses purely from a RL/PL perspective IMO. This will really limit you. It makes very little difference what leaf type the parent varieties are anyway. However, if you are wanting to cross a PL x a RL, using the PL parent as the female makes it easier to tell from the F1 seedlings if the cross "took" or not rather than waiting until the plants ripen fruit later in the summer. Anyway, set yourself some specific goals as to what you want out of the hybrids you want to create. You will find, as I have, that there will be many uncontrollable variables that will prohibit you from making all the crosses you intend to. This will result in some hybrids that you will end up making that you will eventually get bored with and end up not growing any further. Eventually you will also find that unless you have unlimited space like Darth, it will take some time to find what you want in the F2 and F3 generations because you are limited to only growing a few of these segregates. Anyway, a few things to think about.

I usually move the prospective parents for new summer crosses to larger pots about a month before transplanting - giving me a little more time for crossing. This week I transplanted:
Floridity F1 Tomatoberry F1 SunGrape F1 Piccolo F1 Sugar Drop F1 Golden Grape F1 Sugar Baby F1 Aria F1 GVS 51041 F1 GVS 51800 F1 Caramba Green Envy Black Icicle Michael Pollan Rosella Purple Dwarf KZ130 KZ133 KZ139 Captain Lucky and several striped fruited breeding lines
I don't think I've ever had more to work with. I'm jazzed.

Nice list Mark, you should get some interesting results. Where did you get F1 Sugardrop seed?
I wish I had the space to breed that many; I am on a strict limitation of one cross per year because I don't have the room to grow out enough F2's.

Matthew, Sugar Drop is the F2 seed you sent me - the rest are F1s. Growing out the F2s progeny from crosses is definitely the challenge.

Ok, makes sense - I didn't think Tesco would let the F1 seed get out for Sugardrop!
Still musing on what crosses to make this year. If Healthy Colors grows well here I may use that, said to be bicolor, good taste with fair to large amount of late blight resistance. (From Tom Wagner so likely still segregating.)

I've potted up plants I know I'll use in crosses. This might be an interesting cross KZ139 x Rosella Purple (dwarf). Attachments:

I'd like to try the Mountain Magic and Red House Free Standing crosses if I might. Some good possibilities in all of your crosses, but those are the ones that intrigue me the most.

Some of the results from my F2 Kosovo x Green Sausage, and Kosovo x [Lime Green Salad x Green Sausage] are coming in. I'll know more in a week or so.
I sent some seeds to Duh Vinci who got an early start and he has a dwarf black heart that he says has excellent flavor, and the first for me to ripen was a tricolor heart (not sure how that happened). I'm growing out four more F1 [Kx[LGSxGS]] plants to get a better mix of seeds. this cross looks like it will be fun to play with for a long time.

I have different variety of tomatoes, like OSU blue, black cream, nuits australes, italian variety (we can say they are "pure"), and different F2 seeds from determinate hibrid of "industrial" tomatoes. Someone think i can do a breeding experiment with F2 and variety? What i can do? thanks

Thanks, how can i backcross it to one of the parents? The parents of my hibrid tomatoes are unknown.

Backcrossing to the original f1 is the best you can do. You will need more space to grow out more offspring and try to select the traits you are looking for.

When breeding tomatoes does it matter which two tomato plants is the mother?

There is so much knowledge and experience here at this forum, I appreciate the sharing of information.
