Well, since only one post for the last TOW I decided it might be good to try a different one. Due to the higher interest in Green When Ripe tomatoes, I thought Green Giant would be a good one to feature. This one is a first time grow for me, although I have tasted it, I will be growing it this year. The problem with this one is it is clear skinned making it impossible to tell when its ripe. You have to go by feel because it looks just like an unripe tomato. As usual, all comments are welcome. This is also a very big tomato. It is going to be hard to beat Spears Tennessee Green, I really like the flavor of that one, although it doesn't get as large as Green Giant.

Higher interest in Green when ripe? Are you experiencing a lot of interest with your commercial customers? Green tomatoes are not my cup of tomato juice, but I did grow Green Zebra one year. One plant would have sufficed; 4 was too many for a family of two.
Good Luck with the Green Gian

Excellent tomato. Easily the best tasting GWR. Probably the only really good GWR variety available. GWR fruit need a lot of work and this is an excellent parent plant to use. Grubs mystery green was good initially but was unstable and did not stay good for me so I gave up on it. Cherokee green is a distant second to GG in my opinion but still quite good and I normally grow it each year also. PL (REAL pl ) vines. Large fruit are normally 10-18 oz for me. Production can be hit or miss and fruit ripen fairly late. Sometimes in excess of 80 DTM. Clear skin and difficult to determine ripeness without feeling the fruit. Will show a very subtle blushing on the blossom end when ripe also.

Then those were the first ones picked after that. I had trouble producing enough last year because I didn't think they would sell so I didn't plant alot. Bad move on my part, not going to happen this year.

Your picture looks quite tasty. I know there has been interest in Kozula's GWR (#132 and #139) too, but some people have a hard time accepting a GWR tomato - because of the colour.

Green Giant is a very good tomato. Easily in my top 15 for taste. As with Dean, I prefer Spear's Tenn. Green just slightly over Green Giant since I prefer the more tart taste of STG over the sweeter flavor in GG. In a side by side taste test at Tomatopalooza[tm] there was equal preference for GG, STG, and Cherokee Green. Here's some photos. The pink blush on the blossom end can also give you a clue as to the ripeness.... Lee

Well, I guess I'm the only one here that didn't like it. Though, it was a very bad tomato season last year, lots of rainy coll days in Summer, so not much flavor in many toms. At the end of the season, I had to bring most of my toms inside to ripen fully. Green Giant was one of those that had to be ripened indoors just to prevent cracking, plus it was very late for me... But I did take some nice photos, I like this one best ;D

I actually think Malachite Box is the best tasting GWR of what you have listed (though I haven't tried 4 of the ones you list there). It keeps winning all the taste tests up here in my northern climate.

I am going to have to try Malachite Box next year. I have some seed. It just didn't make the cut for this year.
Tastewise, I rate Green Giant just ahead of ARGG, followed by Green Velvet, Grub's Mystery Green & Cherokee Green. Irish Stripes I didn't care for very much, but my plant was determinate.

Each year I try at least one GWR tomato. In 2009 it was Aunt Ruby's, 2010 it was Grub's Mystery Green. I liked the Grub's Mystery Green better. 2011 it is Green Giant. Next year it will probably be Spear's Tennesse Green which I was suppose to grow this year. I am also growing Cherokee Green Pear from Marianna's since my Cherokee Green from last year was a bust. Hopefully it has the same flavor.

Roper, please save seeds From Cherokee Green Pear, I've been trying to get this variety for quite a while now. I have many varieties to trade, and will have more come fall...
