Good morning and Happy New Year, I was wondering if any of you have heard about a site called "Blue Ribbon Tomatoes"? They have a "store" on Ebay that promotes Kentucky based heirloom tomatoes, most of whose names with which I'm unfamiliar. If you have any experience with them, and/or the many Kentucky heirloom varieties they offer, I'd be very much interested in your take. Cheers, Kevin

Hi Kevin,
I bought some seeds from them last year. I was very pleased. The tomatoes were delicious and as described. The price was right, I believe they were 50 cents a packet or $9.99 for 20 varieties. I'll have to check ebay, I would be happy to get more varieties.

I believe Blue ribbon is the name of the site. There are many variants on the blue tomato. The anthocyanin gene is being used as player in new breeding. The striping gene is another one.

Does anyone have any true "Gary O'Sena" seeds from Mueller's line?

Does anyone have any true "Gary O'Sena" seeds from Mueller's line? Kevin/John, I already packaged up seed for Gary'O Sena and have it in your envelope. Just holding off trying to think of more varieties to add to your order. I have about 8 so far. ;D

You guys are too good to me! As I said earlier, my wife and I primarily "can" everything, so production is essential, as it taste. I'll give you something to ponder. I've been looking for something that is perfectly round, (probably no less than 2-1/2", no more than 3" in diameter), blemish free, great tasting and hugely productive, (I'm thinking a determinite variety would also be an advantage). I LOVE canned whole tomatoes in the winter, but I've not been able to nail down a variety that embodies all of the traits above. Any ideas?

Hey guys, It's my understanding that the parentage for Gary O'Sena is Cherokee Purple and Brandywine, (presumably, Sudduth's strain). Are there different lines of Gary O'Sena out there, or are they all pretty much extensions of Mueller's? I ask because I've seen more than one tomato with this reported lineage, and I wonder why the resulting phenotypes are not reasonably the same? As there are multiple Brandywine lines out there, I would assume this accounts for the deviations in subsequent progeny, but I would like to get your thoughts on it.
Best regards, Kevin

Hi, Kevin. Gary'O Sena is indeed an offspring of the Brandywine X Cherokee Purple cross. You can read about it and the others here- www.kdcomm.net/~tomato/releases/john

I see now where "Dora" was "dervived" from a cross of Brandywine x Cherokee Purple", where as Gary O'Sena simply a cross from the two. I suppose in this respect, the breeders of "Dora" were selecting for taste first, phenotype later. Frankly, I was impressed with the Gary O'Sena's I grew last year, and I feel very foolish to have not saved the seed. Are their muliple lines out there of "Gary O'Sena"?

I suppose in this respect, the breeders of "Dora" were selecting for taste first, phenotype later. Kevin, Mule is the breeder of both Dora and Gary'O Sena(correct spelling). Both varieties were stabilized from lines developed from an original cross of Cherokee Purple and Brandywine. There are no different "lines" of either out there because Mule makes certain that the variety is fully stabilized before naming and releasing it to the public. Unlike some others who name and distribute seed long before being stable. If you wanted to, you could conceivably create and stabilize an infinite number of genetically different varieties from one simple cross of two open pollinated parents.

Thank you John, for the explanation, and for the corrention on my spelling of Gary'O Sena. I've got much to learn, and I hope you'll steer me right!
Regards, Kevin
