This weeks pick is Aunt Ruby's German Green, This one can get real big. I didnt have one under a pound!! This watermelon is a yellow doll...it weighed almost 6 pounds...I didnt weigh the tomatoes, we just ate them on bacon sandwiches. It has a nice balance of sweet to acid, somewhat tangy. Oh yeah, I never PRUNE my tomatoes!!

Darth, I have grown ARGG for about 5 years despite it being a RL plant. here is the link to Tatiania's web page which tells the story of ARGG much better than I can. A suggestion: In order to give more information about the tomato of the week, include a link to tat's website in your initial posting so people know better what you are talking about that week. Heres the link for ARGG: tatianastomatobase.com/wiki/Aunt_Ruby%27s_German_Green

Grew it in '06. My first year with non-store bought hybrid plants. Also, my first experience with GWRs. It was as stout plant. Produced well, but fairly late 10-14 oz fruit. The green fruit at 4 o'clock is ARGG.

Is there some rule of thumb? Some secret of knowing a ripe green tomato, from a green tomato that isn't ripe? Since I have no clue on this, I refuse to grow any green tomatoes at all. I want to know when a tomato is ripe.

ozark lady, its mostly by feel...when there is a little give in the tomato when you gently squeeze it....is ripe.....a lot of the greens will have an olive tint when ready to pick.......use them promptly after you pick them as they lose flavor when overripe.

I grew it once in 2006 alongside Cherokee Green which was superior, in my opinion.
Green Giant is better yet, but goes beyond dead ripe in the blink of an eye.
Growing Aunt Ruby's German Green Cherry this year to take a looksee.
Peace, PV

Ciao all-
I grew this one back in 2005 and loved it. A few seasons later, I tried re-growing it for seeds from the same source (Solana Seeds) and it was a large oblate pink with forgettable taste. Then again in 2008 I tried re-growing it again with a new seed source (Carl Ashlock) and it was an oblate pink again. I'm starting to get discouraged, but I still remember how good it was in 2005.
