This is a thread to discuss anything concerning potato leaf tomatoes. Even I, spudleaf Willie don't know all there is to know and learn something new about them every day.
Lets learn more about this unusual characteristic together. Fire away with your questions and i'll try my best to answer them.

Guess I'll start by asking .... Oh boy I'm a-scared For the past, oh I dont know how many years, I have grown potato leaf tomatoes right next to one another and from what I understand that PL will automatically or in general cross with out having to to do all of the little flower mating, pollen collecting, etc... Is this true? Because when I save the seeds from what ever PL I've grown next to one another they in general grow to be true to original type. I hope this makes sense. I am on great pain killers for a recent surgery.

smellycat, PL crosses are not automatic like you think. PLS MAY POLLINATE EASIER THAN RLS BECAUSE THE STIGMAS ON THE PLS ARE EXERCATED but you still have to go thru with the pollen collecting etc. Its a crapshoot as to which adjacent plants will pollinate one another (or not) as plants tend to be self pollinating unless wind, bees, or other methods pollinate them. Hope this helps.

When I save the seeds from what ever PL I've grown next to one another they in general grow to be true to original type "Grightmire's Pride" was mentioned as potato leaved in the thread about heart shaped tomatoes, but both according to Tatiana's database and from the experience of Polish growers it is RL. What is the real deal about it or does it exist in two versions?

Willie... Here a dumb question for you. My main field is ornamental flowering plants and has been for years. I grow some veggies, to eat, a few to sell and lots to share or donate, but as long as I had something edible at the end of the season. I haven't really gotten in to the ins and outs and the mechanics of varieties and best tasting heavy. Now I have the time to really start learning as I move more away from flowers into vegetables and vegetable production.
What are the advantages, if any of growing PL's over RL's ?

Some folks believe there is an advantage in foliar shading to PL tomatoes, also that there is some resistance to foliar diseases as well. I like PL tomatoes based purely upon eating, there are some very good PL tomatoes for eating.
Redneck, I would look to tomatoes such as Marianna's Peace for a good PL to grow. Aunt Ginny's series are also good, then there is German Giant.
