This weeks pic is a tomato that won't quit. This is Daniels, one of the last standing in my 2010 garden. The flavor is great and production is right up there also. A nice PL pink. It seems to stand up to a lot of abuse also, I hit one with a weedwhacker and it still put out a lot of fruit. This pic provided by our own John Beidler. Remember, it is only obscure until you grow it!

Daniels, seed from selectedplants.com, grown in 2009, horrible year, nothing but rain and humidity all the way through June and July. Yet Daniels was able to yield decent tomatoes, even when picked a day or two early to avoid skin splits. You can see the weather stress on these tomatoes compared to John's. In spite of it all, I gotl delicious tomatoes with remarkably high yields for a Brandywine type. Healthy plants, too, considering all the rain and fungi floating around.

Daniels was 68 dtm for me last year. It is a ordinary large pink beefsteak for me. I did side-by-side taste tests with it in 2009 with Aunt Ginnys and Mariannas Peace and it came in third for me. It doesn't even compare to Brandywine. Its not very productive for me either. However, in 2009 when late blight was devastating nearly every plant in my garden by late July, my one Daniels plant looked nearly immune to the effects. I have no idea why. It is certainly not a scientific test by any means, but by late August the weather turned hot and dry and many plants started to put on new top growth. Daniels however still had its full season growth. Last year septoria took down my plants and Daniels went down too. Looking at the below pic, the Daniels plant is front left. Its kinda tough to make out but you see it has foliage top to bottom while the rest of the plants in the same bed only exhibit new growth above the cages. This photo was taken September 5th.
