I've ordered several times from a company called Vernon Barnes and Son Nursery, in McMinnville, Tenn. As far as I can tell, they truly are a family owned operation. Very good value for the prices, Loads of coupons, plus orders over $50 receive 10% off, plus, after the discount, at $50 or more, shipping is free. I've purchased peaches, apples, cherries and pears there with good results. Small operation has not website, but catalogues are available at 931-668-8576

I am a big fan of Stark Bros of Louisiana, Missouri. I have never had a problem with either the health or quality of a fruit tree purchased from Stark. Their customer service is what customer service should be everywhere. Great trees at very reasonable prices. The company was owned by the Stark family and began in 1816, until (I think) until the late 1990's when it was sold to Foster and Gallagher who went bankrupt in the early 2000's. It is again a locally (Missouri and Illinois) owned and locally operated company with family members and long-time employees operating the business. They have really nice catalogs, a good website and real people on the order desk and customer service if you phone in. www.starkbros.comI have purchased peach, pear, apple and apricot trees as well as weeping peach, weeping cherry, crab apple and both regular and weeping red bud trees. My next purchase will be Starkcrimson pear trees.

I suggest buying as local as possible for orchard trees. You will be getting what normally does best in your climate. A California nursery specializes in OLD varieties. Most of what they sell is certified organic. www.treesofantiquity.com/

I liked OIKOS Tree crops, and St Lawrence Nursery for product and selection back when I was IN NH. In The closing days of farmers market in Athens (OH), I'll letcha know what local nurserymen are up to in the spring. It looked pretty good autumnaly, I've gotta shop at arms length first before I go to mail order.
