While backsliding at another forum, harummmmph, which alot here do from time to time, I noticed a thread on this tomato. It would seem others have mixed luck with it, having not grown it, I have no opinion one way or another so feel free to voice yours. I have seeds I just didnt plant them. Being a black tomato, I certainly will get to it, or if you are JT, Purple..hehehe

Bammer, we are from the same planet it seems ;D I am growing exactly the same varieties you are this year and I have similar results with them. Although JD's did outperform Big Cheef IMO. Big Cheef was not all that very special but still a good tomato. JD's had quite some fruits on it and it is a nice looking tomato worth growing...

Grew JD's in 08 with good production and excellent taste. There's also a JD's Special Pink floating around. It's #7 at the bottom of the picture. Ami Attachments:

Reports I get from the midwest say it is a good tomato but nothing great. Reports from here in the deep south are consistent that it is an excellent flavored tomato. One note, be careful where you get seed. There are at least 3 different variants floating around and only 1 of them has decent flavor. The others are probably just chance crosses that don't measure up.

Dar, I couldn't agree with you more. I grew two plants of JD's side by side, each of them was from a different seed source. One was a good tasting tomato and the other one was just superb taste wise. Sweet and succulent... I saved seed from that one to regrow it next year

This was another one I grew last year and again this year from seed from Gary Millwood. It was very popular at market and did pretty well but succumbed to SLS mid-late season. A customer knocked one over at market so I cut it up and gave samples which was kind of a bad idea since I didn't have many of them available that day and once people ate the sample they all wanted to buy it. So given that reaction, I am selling plants of it this season.

Pap, one source was you, the other was Stratcat, but by the end of the season I couldn't find the tags, as my cat was digging around some tomato plants... I will be planting the seeds from my plant, your seeds and Stratcat's seeds again next year to determine which one was the parent of this tasty mater. Simply don't have the space to do that this year as I have many new varieties to try. Varieties that I like come back every two years as I haven't yet found my permanent 'to grow' list... I can send you seeds from the fruits of my plant if you like

Being that I just signed up today, I'm a bit late commenting on this variety but I came across this variety five or so years ago. It is one of my favorites producing fruit very similiar to Cherokee Purple but with much improved fruit production. The flavor has always been excellent for me. There is more to the story that I'll provide later. I sent Darrel Jones a sample of seed years ago and he started his seed stock from growing out plants from that seed sample I sent him.
I'm also am the one that experianced an apparent spontaneous mutation with this variety that produced what I now call JD's Special Pink.
I'll post a photo perhaps tomorrow.

Hej, Nolika! I got my seed from Jay for the 2008 season.
Looking back, only one seed sprouted and was a blind for the longest time. It looked all gnarly but I hardened it off. I planted it and it finally sent out a growing tip. That year in September I finally got a purple tomato.
I sure liked your "Dog ate my homework" story with the plant tags. ;D
I'd give plants to my cousin and his dog would dig up all the plant tags. My friend with a barnyard garden would also lose the cups with the names of my plants. More than once.
Welcome to TTG, Jay.

JD's Special is an awesome tomato here in coastal SE NC. It tolerates our heat, humidity & concurrent drought like a champ & produces big dark delicious boat-shaped tomatoes that compete with Cherokee Purple in flavor & actually surpass CP in texture. I am growing the last of my original seed this year & plan to bag & save alot. I am also growing from seed from 2 other sources -we'll see how they compare.

BV, Nice to see you around. I wondered last summer where you were and how to contact you. You sent me seeds for JD's Special Pink and I believe another tomato you called it Mystery Black if memory serves me correctly. I will have to check that name for sure. Due to several issues some self inflicted I never picked a tomato of either till last summer. I had 2 JD's Special Pink plants and one died due to disease issues. The other produced great tasting Pink tomatoes that were heart shaped. It tied for the best tasting tomato I raised last season. Originally I thought the heart shape might be caused partly by environmental influences. But it produced hearts all summer. I wanted to ask you if they were supposed to be hearts. Also fairly productive. I saved a lot of seeds and starting seeds now. Will grow more plants this year so should know more after this season. The Pink had better flavor than any JD's Special C-Tex I've grown. Look forward to your pictures. I have several pictures of mine I can compare too and post if anyone wants to look at pictures. Jay

Its funny because i got a heart pink out of Vorlon, perfect..smooth and better tasting than vorlon, could have been a stray seed..but I dont think so.. Anyway, this isnt Goldmans Italian American...? Seems everyone likes this one..as it has been knocking the tomato of the week out of its spot for 2 weeks!!
