This weeks tomato is Copia. This is supposed to be one of the better looking striped tomatoes, I planted about 50 of them, so imagine my chock when I went to find it and got this!! Well, that certainly isnt what I thought it should look like, so I checked my layout and checked the row marker and sure enough that was the Copia section. This was still a decent tomato, late..but decent..a cross perhaps? The original seeds I got was from Tomato Growers. Sorry about the Blur, but this is the only pic I have, and before you say something JT I didnt take this one...hehe

Copia is a selection from a natural cross between Green Zebra and Marvel Striped that was found by Jeff Dawson who has bred several varieties himself, including Orange Russian #117. Copia was named in honor of the the Institute for Food, Wine and the Arts, and probably so b'c that's where Jeff moved to after he gave up his own commercial tomato activities.
Copia was first listed in the SSE YEarbook in 2003.
It's supposed to genetically stable but when I read the SSE YEarbook entries I see different descriptions for it as to size and presence or lack of striping as well as differeing opinions about taste, mostly on the negative side, so I'll be curious what you think of the taste Dean.
I knew it was a natural cross and that Jeff Dawson, whom I know, was involved, but I had to go back several Yearbooks to find what the assummed parents were.
Jeff also used to sell seeds online but when he stopped his commercial activities he sold all of his seed packs to Gary Ibsen at Tomatofest.

Carolyn, this wasn't a horrible tomato..it just wasn't what I expected. And the taste was actually very good! Very sweet, my chefs loved them! This one definitely took after the marvel Stripe parent..and there was not much difference between the colors on these and the actual MS. I did save seeds, and will try planting it again to see how the recombinations manifest.
