This was actual seed or cloves you planted in flats? These are cloves, Jt I had to do somethimg before I lost them. They are growing fine and I think will be ok till the snow is off one of the beds, I make alot of raised beds in the fall after I till in manure, one less thing I have to do in the spring.

Durgan, About the only thing I can really agree with you on is the fact that elephant garlic is not really garlic. Other than that the statement about hardneck and softneck holds water but isn't really telling the entire story. While you may have grown garlic for 40 years some of your facts are somewhat distorted "IMO", and I am far from being any type of expert. I have grown purple and rose colored garlics in the past. I have experienced many different tastes and strengths of garlic, some really great, some almost inedible they were so strong. I think using absolute terms in describing opinons might lead others without as much knowledge on a path of misconception. Especially when presented with the air of authority that you seem to favor. Again, I'm no expert of any kind, but it seems the older I get the more opinonated I become, and the less likely to keep my mouth shut. Camo

Oooppps! Just figured out that I listed Red Janice as a soft neck, but it is a turban hard neck! And, I just checked before the forcasted snow hits again and I've got over 95% of all varieties up and smiling! And, another "and" , In the bulb storage and longevity arena - I'm down to only 2 varieties of good bulbs left from last year's Mid June crop. Simonetti and German Porcelian. The others have been eaten or have finally sprouted(still tasty), rotted, or dried out. T

I normally plant garlic in the fall, due to the heat issues here in the summer.
I grew my own garlic and harvested it in 2009, when the summer heat killed the tops. This was your basic supermarket garlic, not a named variety.
But, it grew well, and even bloomed and set seeds at the top.
I braided that garlic, and it has hung in my kitchen available for use all year... Until now, now the 5-6 remaining, have sprouted. So, I planted them yesterday. Lousy time of year for me.
My plan is... let them grow till summer heat kills the tops, lift and dry them.
Then, this fall, replant them to go for the winter. Will this idea stand any chance of success?
I was going to lose the bulbs anyhow, they were sprouting.
Since, last year was my first attempt, and I only used grocery store garlic, to see if I could even grow it. I simply hung the garlic, and planned on eating it... well, we did eat alot of it. And I could not tell any difference in it and the grocery store garlic... mine were no better, no worse, just cheaper.

Garlic harvest began today. Zemo and pskem were first. I expected to start early, and the hot dry weather will accellerate that further.
