I have trouble of one kind or another with all the "Brandywines" except Red Brandywine - Landis (RL) and a pink standard Brandywine (PL) from seeds I purchased on a display at Rural King. Those two I can count on for plenty of tomatoes on healthy vines.
Cowlicks went down early to Septoria. Terhune lasted much longer than most others, and made lots of tomatoes early, but couldn't take the heat. Barlow Jap suffered same fate as Cowlicks and in about the same time frame. Yellow Brandywine - Platfoot made 4 tasty tomatoes which I consider a waste of space even with that flavor. KBX was much superior in all regards to YB-Platfoot, and the taste was comparable, in my opinion. Orlov's Yellow, which I consider about the same as Yellow Brandywine, was comparable in lateness and production, ergo - waste of space.
Oh, on other excellent "Brandywine" is Daniels. It's been failsafe in my garden for durability and production. Taste is superior to the standard Brandywine I bought at Rural King from that Livingston Seed Company display (a Columbus, Ohio company).
I've had some good success with Brandywine crosses particularly those crossed with Cherokee Purple. And personally, I think the cross to Cherokee Purple improves the flavor of Brandywine.

;D Carolyn, please help me with my memory. And possibly your own. LOL Didn't I send you some Cowlick's seed? If not I have more I can send... It's not so much your memory as it is mine. ;D As I recall there were three packets and one was Dana's Dusky Rose and right now I don't remember the other two. I have some of the letters with seeds in them in my walker basket and just checked there and they weren't there so no doubt they're in back room I call my tomato room and I'll find them there when I get around to inventorying the new seeds that have been sent. So lets just assume it was one of those three packets, OK? Carolyn

Carolyn, I just checked some old PM messages because I myself am curious what I sent. You should have DDR, Vorlon and Cowlicks in that back room. If not, I goofed! ;-)

I have grown only two strains. The standard Pink and Cowlicks.Cowlicks did better in production and taste. This is not to say the Pink did not do good on taste but the Cowlicks did better. And it had more large slicers here in Michigan.

I did this post to clear up some of the misconceptions of the newer so called cultivars, myself, I am not a fan of Brandywines as I can name quite a few that out produce and taste better than BW, not saying they arent a good tomato..I just dont find all the hype justified. As Blane stated, we had a couple of his Cowlicks, and I have to admit they were very tasty, but in no way could they compete with stump of the world or say mariannes peace. Definatly not in the same ball park as Grandpa Willie, but, again that is only my opinion.

I ordered Suddoth's strain from Victory Seeds last night, along with Yellow Brandywine.
I think that anyone who wants the famous Brandywine flavor, had best go to a reputable source. About 15 years ago, I could buy Brandywine plants which produced recognizable Brandywine tomatoes. Last summer, having moved into my house June first, and moved across country in May, with no opportunity for seed starting, I bought tomato and other plants locally. (Cuke plants turned out to be zucchini). The alleged Brandywines were PL plants which produced quantities of a large red tomato of undistinguished flavor. I think seed in the nursery trade has become both mislabelled and corrupted by crossing with other varieties. BTW, I bought from local suppliers, not Wallyworld.
