we got a freezer full of all the small seeds but it won't contain the bushel of gourdseed corn and the mound of vegetable soybeans that hasn't been thrashed yet. I think we have enough seed to plant at least 100 acres of stuff. But that's life as it oughta be, reserve food supply in seed form. I'm fraid anyone who isn't saving seed is risking serious food shortages, because food production and distribution systems arn't anywhere near as reliable as most people assume they are. Wouldn't take much to upset the system and cause major problems real fast. I know about a prediction made by a woman of reputation (accuracy reputation) who declared that at some future time the price of food would rise suddenly and scare people, they'd try to stock up quickly with poor results.

If it only holds 900, buy another one now = you're going to need it.

I would probably make sections (color, or size, or leaf type) and organize them each alpahabeticaly. For ability to find things, you are going to have to make a database with all of the pertinent info = name, date acquired, who from, type color and all the other fancy data that you might be able to use to select with.

You have seen the mess I have for a seed collection = with the exception of the current years trading seeds, the bulk are just filed alphabetically. With a half decent database entry for each one, it is very easy to find what ever it is you are looking for. It's very easy to list, in separate columns, all of the attributes you might use for a search. once that is done, the database can be resorted by individual attributes if need be, by moving a particular column to the front of the line up, and sorting. I am beginning to run into some different problems with storage, now that I am growing out larger numbers of things other than tomatoes, but the same methodology (once I get off my duff) will work with them.

A little follow up = if you upload your database to google docs, you can do the resort by column without moving the columns around, by selecting the column at the very top and right clicking on it = one of the options is sort sheet A-Z, and it does it based on the column you have selected. This means you can do a sort based on size, color, leaf, or what ever column you have selected, without having to move the columns around. If you want to do the same thing in excel or open office, you have to re-organize the columns first, and sort by the first column.
