Botanically it is a fruit (but don't put them in a fruit salad).

I agree with RTT. Botanically its a fruit. By application it is savory and gets used after fruit cup and before desert.
Katsup was probably a fish based sauce out of the other side of the pacific rim, When the sole supply was exhausted in 1850's SanFransisco, foodies demanded a replacement right away! A dilligent Chinese cook came up with what we now know as katsup.
All things concidered I like the result of his long ago work.

I must say the tomato is a fruit thing is a pet peeve of mine. This is how it really goes: we eat the fruiting member of a tomato plant yes but also of a pepper plant, eggplant, squash, cucumber, pumpkin, pea, even each kernel of corn is supposed to be a fruit. Everything in the garden is a plant, not a fruit or vegetable- we just eat different parts of the plants. The part with the seeds is the fruit.

I have heard an opinion that the tomato is a fruit of the vine, making it technically a berry.

Catsup (et al) is indeed a Anglicization of the Malay word for fish sauce and was indeed a fish sauce based product originally, much like Worcestershire Sauce may be a form of the ancient Roman garam, which did not originally have fruit in it either.

I'd have to lean on the dictionary definition because otherwise there's nothing to go by except somebody's common usage which changes with the regions and races.
now I don't use catchup/catsup/katsup/ketchup on a regular basis, but it's ok sometimes. However I do not like fish in any form, just never cared for the flavor. And since I prefer bein vegetarian anyway i arn't in any hurry to get used to it.
I can see it now! coming in from the garden with a bunch of maters and hollerin "hey, look at these nice berries"
Yah, a good share of the "vegetables" we grow are actually fruit. Just the edible roots and stems and leaves make up the vegetable part of it. I see the definition of fruit as the fleshy part around a seed. which means corn and peas and such are not fruits, rather seeds and grains.
