The spore comes on pre-inoulated dowels, do not clean the fuzz off, that is the mycilium. The dowels will stay good in the refrigerator for up to 6 months.

That is cool Darth! I would like to learn how to grow mushrooms! I get catalogs in the mail from time to time for a place called "Fungi Perfecti"
Mushrooms are interesting and I love the flavor they add to cooking!
Do you set the logs in the woods after they have been inoculated?
One day when I get a bigger piece of land I am thinking of building a "darkhouse" hehe... The opposite of a greenhouse:) for growing mushrooms. Having some wooded land would be great also!
I am glad that you made the post here! Please post pictures of the logs when they fruit.
Thanks!

Here are the pics of the mushroom logs all done, Norm drilled 700 holes and put all the dowels in, then sealed them with sealing wax. Now we wait in 6-8 months we will get $12.99 a pound! These are oyster and shitake mushrooms.

Use oak, it will give you longer yield..you can use other hardwoods, but they won't last as long. And the flavor will be compromised.

Hey Darth... Do you set the logs in a shaded area? I think you have just started a wave:) Do you inoculate in the winter? How many years do you get a harvest? Curious... This is the place that I was thinkin of ordering from: www.fungiperfecti.com/It would be cool to have some fungus among us here at TTG!

Well, they are only supposed to be 4-6 inches around, but I thought perhaps if the mycellium had a larger area, it would perhaps take longer but also give me increased yield. All the info is on the website. Which I will post later.

I just had the opportunity to try these, so I bought a small bunch to try and grill... I put them on and promptly forgot about them...not so much of a total waste, but enough to make me mad as a hornet! texture was good enough to be a meat sub, but just couldn't get over the almost burnt taste...next time I will be more careful, so I can really find out how these baby's taste...I do know enough to know, that I really like the texture, but that's about it so far.
