Incorporating organic material like leaves is ALWAYS a good thing. Fall is a good time so it is well rotted by spring planting.

If you can chop up the leaves it will help them become usable organic matter. I use a chipper/shredder, but a lawnmower will do fine. In my case, I add aluminum sulfate to decrease my pH. I suggest tilling the leaves into the soil rather than let them lay on top.

get a soil test from an ag experimental station or state university and adjust your pH first, jt is right about organic matter. you soil test will also give you recommendations about nutrients. application of most soluble nutrients should wait until spring.
