It will be easy to select tomatoes that don't have these genes. Just select plants that have dark green foliage. More appropriately, just don't grow commercial tomatoes.

That is interesting. Thinking about it, all the tomatoes I like best for eating have the dark green shoulders. I find the u gene uniform ripening varieties look unnatural before ripening too, which puts me off a little; glad to know there is now a better reason to be prejudiced against them.
