OK, JT here is one for you...this weeks pick is Sungold. I dont usually grow hybrids, but EVERYONE grows this one. I wish we could nail down the genetics, and figure the lineage out on this. RL orange and sweet with flavor, notice the correct spelling of flavor, no extra letters....hehe. This is sweet and has a complex taste MOST people like, the acid lovers may not be overly thrilled by the taste of this one. I still think snow white gives this one some competition, but I only listen to the people that pay.... Here at TOW I will try to expand your tomato knowledge as there is way more out there than Brandywines. Some people are very familiar with some of the ones listed, some not..All have the rite to claim a favorite, the cool thing about Heirlooms is...there are more than one kind!!! Red is not the grail!!!!

I never grew Sungold........I have growing right now, three beautiful smooth edged PL plants of a Galinas x Snow White F2 cross. Raymondo in Austrailia did the cross and sent me the seeds of both the F! and F2 growouts. Both leftylogan and Darth are growing the F2 cross out this year so we should have a good test of the flavor and whether the cross adds a tart taste to the sweetness of Sungold. Inquiring minds are waiting to see if there is a flavor improvement over Sungold!!!. There is a link at T'ville showing pics of the Galinas x Snow White cross with pics of both the F1 and F2 fruits but i cant find it at the moment. Heres the link in the Crosstalk thread at T'ville ..... tomatoville.com/showthread.php?t=12045.

I grew Sungold and Sungold Select II an OP version last year. I had better production and personally flavor from the Sungold Select II. This year I trying the Sungold in a different location and going to compare it against a new OP version called Big Sungold Select.

I like Sungold and grow it every year. Sun Sugar and the OP versions of Sungold to me were not as good, lacked the mix of flavors that I like in Sungold.

Sungold is the best cherry available IMO. It will continue to be a must grow for me every year. The only op variety that even comes close to it for flavor is black cherry. Its only drawback is the fruit's tendency to crack. I haven't grown Sun Sugar, but will be this year so I cannot comment on it yet. Sungold has tremendous production and is consistently one of the earliest varieties I grow. However, last year I grew out a few F2 plants of a hybrid that papavic created in 2007 from the parent varieties Indian Stripe and Sungold. Well, I can say that the brown cherries that one of the plants made (pic below) easily rivaled it's male Sungold parent for flavor! I am really looking forward to seeing what comes out of this cross going forward. This season I will be growing out at least six or eight, maybe even ten if I can find the space, F3 plants grown from that saved seed this year hoping to see similar plants.

I have two Sungold Select II plants this year. One of them is in the garden the other is in a container. I have blossoms but no fruit so far, still a little early for where I live.
