I would like to get some answers about the physical process of pollination and fertilization of the tomato. I saw a question arise on another board and would appreciate input from mulio, gobs or frogs on the topic as I have a few questions. My understanding is that the number of carpals will determine the number of locules and is controlled by genetics which varies from variety to variety. This leads me to my first question...Is the number of ovules determined by genetics and will each carpal contain the same quantity of them? I also understand that when pollinated by a single grain of pollen, the ovules turn into the seed of the fruit. For the next question lets assume that the blossom has been emasculated and there is zero possibility of selfing. Is it conceivable for each ovule to be fertilized by a different variety's pollen grain thus leading to a ripe fruit where each F1 seed will be essentially a different hybrid?

While you're at it. how about commenting on incomplete or low levels of pollination and the effect on fruit quality...
