Has anyone grown Micro-tom, Red Robin, etc. - extremely small tomato plants, say under 12" tall or so? What did you think about them? I'm wondering about breeding something along those lines with big, delicious beefsteaks in an effort to develop fair sized, good-tasting table top tomatoes.

Johno,
I've grown Micro Gemma from seeds I got from IFAS. Didn't think much of it. Pretty little plant until it got some sort of leaf problem. Fruit was tiny too and so was flavor. I took a couple of plants up to Alan in 2007 and he may have some seeds. I'll check tomorrow to see if I kept any.
Also grew Micro-Tom this year and left some seeds in Anguilla with a scientist who operates the greenhouse there for Cuisinart Resort. He's working on tabletop growing units. I think I kept some of those seeds too and may have them at the office as well. I grew one plant at home summer 2009 and again, cute plant, disease susceptible, poor eating quality, IMO.
You're free to any seeds I have left for either variety.

I have Red Robins growing again this year. Red, sweet tasting cherries with more fruit than foliage, which is rugose. Need a big enough pot so they don't jump off the window ledge.

John, Micro Gemma which is micro-tom's illegitimate yellow-fruited sister was a spitter and definitely NOT a swallower. ;D
The best one I've grown, and one which I have grown on my windowsill here at work for 2+ years now is Hardin's Miniature. Excellent grape-shaped nippled red fruit, with miniature RL foliage. Got plenty of seed if you want to give it a try.
I've also tried Red Robin and Tiny Tim, both of which were mediocre tasting at best.
