All the tomatoes in the following pictures come from Purple Haze grow out vines.
Two of the vines are Purple Haze F2s from KCMO.
Two of the vines are Purple Haze F4s from AmiDeutch.
The purpose of the thread is to show and discuss different recombinations of the genes inherent in Purple Haze ...
basically [Brandywine x Cherokee Purple (F4)] x Black Cherry.
Here is a pile of tomatoes from all 4 vines:
The small, perfectly round tomatoes are typical cherry tomato size, about the same as Gardener's Delight,
just slightly larger than most Black Cherry tomatoes I've grown ...
although I have seen Black Cherry fruit the same size from other folks' gardens.
The larger cherry tomatoes to the right of the small ones are double fruited cherries about the same size as Purple Haze F1,
maybe just a bit larger in one dimension due to the boat shape caused by the doubling fruit (fasciated fruit).
The two cherry types are from F2 KCMO seeds, potato leaf vines, and have a nice interior structure and pretty good flavor ...
not as good as the F1, but decent enough to proceed.
The smaller, multiple fasciated, little pumpkin shaped tomatoes are from yet another vine, this time from AmiDeutch's F4 seeds.
The larger, multiple fasciated, pumpkin shaped tomatoes are from another AmiDeutch F4 vine.
Both the little pumpkins have a hard, white core and while the flavor is okay, the texture is not worth pursuing.
In addition, the blossom ends are concave as if they were pinched from a ceramic model when the clay was still damp.
Pretty, but not practical as a fruit.
The following pictures show the interior structures common to each type.
The single, smaller cherry looks like a typical cherry tomato both outside and inside:
On the double cherries, you can clearly see the doubling or "fused" fruit structure:
... and closer up:
The pumpkin shaped fruit off both vines look the same inside, one is just larger than the other:
Again, the only point is that when growing out something like Purple Haze, where there are three parents of various sizes
and attributes, one might get all kinds of shapes and sizes in the early stages of recombination.
All the vines for these 4 types are potato leaf only because I culled them that way.
