Hello from NW Indiana I post at TVille and iDigg as Fortyonenorth, but discovered thetomatogarden through Tania’s site. Seems like a great place for spirited discussion I’ve been gardening for more than twenty years, but only started growing tomatoes four years ago. We live in the Indiana Dunes, a stone’s throw from Lake Michigan. Our underlying soil is almost pure beach sand - “completely unsuitable for agriculture” as deemed by the USGS. In any event, I garden in raised beds and containers and grew about thirty heirloom varieties this year, looking to grow about 50-60 next year - the list keeps growing, of course. I also grow sweet and hot peppers, potatoes, onions and lots of garlic.

Welcome fortyone!! I live in northern Mi and startd with nothing but sand, with the right addatives it has become sandy loam and is GREAT for tomatoes and peppers, I always add leaves and horse manure, then plant alf alfa or soy beans, and till them in. This year I fall planted hairy vetch, for the first time! Welcome to the best tomato forum out there!!
