Welcome Soren, and yes, there are several of us here you should recognize and some you'd know if they used the same user names they use elsewhere. ;D But as you know, I'd recognize you as either Soren or Danish Gardner. Carolyn, who if she were younger would have bred tomatoes, but back then in the Mastodon era folks just didn't do that, at least the ones I knew. That's humans, not Mastodons, who were not known as tomato breeders. ;D Folks did recognize the F1's of natural crosses and make selections and stabilize them, but there were few who did deliberate crosses, at least with the OP heirloom kinds. For sure they were doing it with the commercial ones, though, whether they be Rutgers or Break O Day, etc. Carolyn

Thank you for all the welcomes! Maybe I should have written a bit about my growing conditions: Living in the cold north with a short growing season, tomato growing is quite a challenge here if you want to grow them outside a greenhouse. Therefore I grow most of my tomatoes (and cuke's, egg plants, melons ect.) in my greenhouse. I do grow some varieties outside the greenhouse, but it is a total gamble as they often will get hit by a early/late frost or, more commonly, potato blight before they can produce anything (especially the late beefsteak varieties). Most of the tomatoes in the greenhouse are grown in Maxikap's (a danish SWC, made of hard styrofoam dk.scapackaging.com/upload/16_scapackaging.dk/01_Billeder/08_Artikler/2005/F-NB051-pindstrup.gif ) So you can see my space is limited, but still I grew around 20 varieties this year, and I already have over 30 varieties ( plus some F1's and F2's from the crosses I made this year) on my 2011 grow list And I fear that "the point of no return" lies way behind me...
