I'll be planting several F2 populations this summer, wanting to maximize number of F2 segregants/population and realizing I have some space limitations. I was thinking about planting two plants per hill to double the number of progeny I can evaluate in a given amount of nursery space. Although this will make it difficult to select for differences in vegetative traits within the two plants in the same hill, I'm thinking I could still evaluate and select for fruit characteristics. Anybody tried this, or have suggestions?

Haven't tried it myself frogs, but next year I will have F2 seed from the 15 or so different crosses I made this past season and will need more space. I was contemplating squeezing two more plants into my 4x12' beds for a total of 12 per bed. Was hoping to try and get at least 6 plants for each cross.

My beds are 4x16 and I've been crowding 18 plants per bed, now doubling to 18 hills w/ 2 plants per hill. I've also got 15-20 F2 families, but would like ~18 progeny/family.

Yes, Frogs, I did that this past summer. Planted two vines per cage on several F2s and F3s just for that reason ... save space. Had to prune some for awhile and then had to tie colored ribbons around the main shoots and side shoots and kind of follow on up the vines with more color-coding ribbons to keep track of what was what.
Worked out good for me on the Juane Flamme x Sun Gold and the Big Cheef. Not so good on a couple that I lost track of which vine was which ... like one cage with 3 different Indian Stripe x Sun Gold ... but then luckily all three vines had different color fruit from one another on that cage.

I like the color coded ties idea. This winter I ordered three colors of wire ties online. Most of my F1s were between parents with very different fruit colors/types, so I think I should be able to pull it off

Mulio, very cool. What's with the green longitudinal stripes on a couple of these yellow fruited types?
