Hey, Rich! Welcome back!
I'm still on extra-super-duper-slow speed dial-up. My 2011 resolution is to get high-speed internet over the phone lines. Then I'll be able to watch YouTube vids properly.

Hey Richard,
Good to see you again !! We have DSL here and normally run 4 comps here. Down side with that at least here is only one comp can watch online vids here. Other than that browsing etc is not bad.

DLD, what carrier do you have on satellite? If it is Hughes, make sure you read your usage rights carefully. You don't want to exceed them.

Actually she bitches about the computer and I keep telling her it's the connection. ;D I just bought her a new PC last year. Tom

I live somewhat in the boonies, you know, well water which is actually great, etc, and the village has cable but that stops at the village limits which is about four miles from me.
So I have no experience with cable here, but did before I moved here at one point.
When I moved here in 1999 there already was small type dish up on the hill with cables leading down to the house, and that had been preceeded by one of those monster dishes, all sitting on a concrete platform at the edge of the nearest field.
So I started out with Direct TV and the only problem was that with a really heavy cloud cover, usually accompanying a storm, the picture would break up.
About 5 years ago I switched to Dish network and no problems at all, well, not quite, actually this past Fall the picture was breaking up in clear sunny blue sky weather. That was solved when Freda went up there and found a squirrel nest on the center thingie and she removed that and all has been well.
Every other year or so the birch saplings in front of the sattelite dish need to be clipped down.
Some folks around here have Wild Blue sattelite but aren;t all that thrilled with that one and several have considered Hughs, but they are over the top price-wise compared with Dish or Direct TV.
If any problems pop up I go to a local business called Northeast Satellite for that and for advice. If you do go with DISh or Direct TV the folks who use them directly for installations and trouble shooting have mixed results as to those subcontractors.
Both of them always have deals going all the time and it really is worth it to have folks who know a lot about satellite reception.
But I forget to say that my access to the net is via Verizon as of maybe 4 years ago and that got me high speed which I love. No more dialup at all and I'm never going back.
I had some problems with Verizon high speed, there are two levels of how fast, this past summer but that was b'c they'd oversold bandwidth in my area and I was being knocked off the net up to 5 times a day.
Without going into all the details I was given more bandwidth personally, I'm told based on my computer usage, and everything has been perfect.
However, one has to live within I think about three miles from a Verizon substation to even get DSL and I got an earful of problems that folks farther out were having, they shouldn't have even attempted DSL, b'c what happens is that Verizon splits the lines so that the farther away you are from the substation the more the lines are split which then leads to problems as well.
So I'm happy with what I have and when I think back to my first home computer which had 4 MB of memory and how long it took to download anything, or all the phone calls for dial up, I never ever want to go back.
I've been pretty stupid in this post b'c at first I didn't realize you wanted to use satellite access to the net, not just TV. Consumers Report in a recent issue addressed the issue of using various bundled services available and the bundled Verizon for TV and net was NOT highly rated.
So you might want to stop by your library and take a look at that article b'c there's some great advice there for all.
I'm too darn lazy to go back up in this post and delete the satellite TV access I spoke to b/c I didn't realize you were looking primarily for computer access.
What spooks me a bit is that everything having to do with my high speed DSL line can be tracked from India and actually they've been very nice to work with.
And it doesn't hurt that when I was being knocked off so many times each day and a local Verizon worker came to my home to check things out, as well as to others on my road that were having the same problem, that she was a she, had been here before when my house was hit by lightning and so knew the area well. She has the highest Verizon Tech rating one can earn, and yet when she shows up I know a couple of instances where the customer insisted that a man come. No further comment on that one.
Furthermore it turned out that her husband wanted to go commercial with farmer's markets and wanted to grow all sorts of things. So she asked me if he could come over and we could talk about the seeds he'd already bought.
He'd bought hundreds of dollars worth of seed from Baker Creek and as for his tomato selections, I just blanched. I've got to call him and have him come over and give him some decent varieties. ;D

I use DSL. ATT Uverse. You should test your bandwidth capabilities at the link below to see how your's stacks up. It will vary depending on what time of day you test. www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/mine is 2.9mb down and .95 up. Not great but certainly not dialup.

Dial-up, DSL, or satillite? Your thoughts? DSL - Install your main line from your phone box terminal outside (Where you have the other phone lines connected into), then install your plug-in end on the other end of the line, then plug that into the router box(little black box), then take your DSL cable and plug that in to the router and to your computer. I have DSL through Embarq - formerly know as Sprint. Took me an hour. Although I'm fairly young in my mid 30's so figure why it didn't take me long to set it up. I figure you read my instructions you might be -> If you are consult a neighbor that had set up their DSL on their own, that is if you have any neighbors with DSL. ;D

I'm on dial up, my only other option would be Hughes and I'm not ready to go that route, yet.

Hey yea!!! Welcome Back Rich!... We got comcast down here in the capitol city, blazing fast internet, I cant complain there. I can run IE, google chrome, and firefox all at the same time, and watch a video if I choose. After going high speed in 2006, I cannot imagine Dial-Up ever again....even though our system at the office is just about as slow, but comcast has its issues, everytime somebody down the road gets new service or discontinues, it affects our line. I usually have to report a problem, every other month.
