Ok, all of you who have crosses, and are new to the {Blue} Tomatoes need to know one thing...ruthlessness...thats right. When it comes to the O.S.U or anything involving the P20 in say crosses, or other. You need to select only th seedlings showing dark leaves or veins in the seedling stage, get rid of the rest, I dont mean give them away, I mean DESTROY them. If not, you will be undoing what others are striving for, increased anthocyanin. You may want to get a magnifying glass to look at the veins in the cotyledons {First 2 leaves the plant has} aka propellerheads. This also applies to crosses that have P20 as a parent. Like Keith Mueller has said many times, it is the high light coupled with cool..NOT COLD.. that effects the amount of darkness one sees, I also use mirrors to reflect more sunlight on the tomatoes coupled with clipping the sepals. You must do this as soon as the tomato starts to form or you are wasting your time.

Also, somewhere in there the hp gene has to be considered.

Is there a source for seed for these lines, or are these just so nasty tasting that's it is just not worth the effort to breed with them?

We have many new Plans to experiment with crossing some of these lines. Bad or Good....whats your views?.... Just curious..

I got out at least one plant last year that showed significant levels of anthocyanin and had exceptional flavor. The biggest improvement was that it had a high level of sugar in the fruit. So from my perspective, there is potential for good flavored high anthocyanin tomatoes.

I agree, there is no direct linkage to Aft and flavor, it is just a background germplasm issue. That said, this is a complicated project. I got out at least one plant last year that showed significant levels of anthocyanin and had exceptional flavor. The biggest improvement was that it had a high level of sugar in the fruit. So from my perspective, there is potential for good flavored high anthocyanin tomatoes. DarJones

Yes, Blane I did. I've been sort of an internet voyeur on the message boards the last few years. I read, but don't post. What I have seen is that not a lot of flavor originated with the OSU plant and the majority of the OSU progeny has been the same. As Frogsleap said, it looks like a complicated project.
Which brings me back to my question. Does anyone have any anthocyanin rich lines that they are NOT going to pursue that they would be willing to let me work with? I would love to find something that is a few generations removed from P20/OSU that would give me a jump start on flavor but working in a different direction than you might have intended.
I'm beginning to feel like the only one on the planet not growing a "blue" tomato.
