OK, I hope this is not confusing? Say, like the Kellogs Breakfast and KBX are the same just different leafs, how come there is a taste difference? And is it that way with most of the other PL versions of RL's?

Technically, they are not the same. Just because two varieties share a similar name except for the leaf type, e.g. Cherokee Purple and Cherokee Purple Potato Leaf, does not mean they are the same except for leaf type. Technically they a completely different genetically.

Technically, they are not the same. Just because two varieties share a similar name except for the leaf type, e.g. Cherokee Purple and Cherokee Purple Potato Leaf, does not mean they are the same except for leaf type. Technically they a completely different genetically. Yet people in authority say that Cherokee Purple and Cherokee Chocolate are the exact same tomato with only a skin color mutation. Having grown both side by side for a couple years I have to disagree there too! Not only do I find a taste difference between them, I have found that Cherokee Chocolate has a somewhat longer shelf life than Cherokee Purple, which has one of the shortest shelf life's of tomatoes that I like. But both make a wonderful sauce! I have found taste differences in Caspian Pink P.L. and R.L. also but No noticeable difference in taste between Amazon Chocolate P.L. and R.L., or Kellogg's Breakfast and KBX. Where I normally see a difference is in production and longivity, seems on our normally hot and dry years the P.L. versions do better. Not as noticable on cooler and wetter years like last year. So basicly it's a crapshoot depending more on the weather, than other factors. I still favor Potato-Leafed when given a choice, and most of my real favorites (read Brandywine), are only available in P.L. So if you have the room, grow both, and decide which you think does better! Camo

I think you will have a serious challenge proving Kellogg's Breakfast and KBX are the same tomato with just different leaf expressions. Same with Cherokee Purple and Spudakee. Same with any of the so called series of mutations from Cherokee Purple > Cherokee Green > Cherokee Chocolate, etc.; also regarding Golden Cherokee especially. Same with many of the supposed leaf or epidermis "mutations."
Therefore, I think it is only speculation that leaf form influences superior taste profiles either way when comparing the supposed PL vs RL versions of whatever variety you wish to compare. Just my opinion, but I think there's more influence conveyed via stray pollen than there is via leaf form ... at least in those few discussed so far in this thread.
