Very interesting indeed. These could almost be grown as ornamental foliage plants, the Japanese in particular love variegated and multi-coloured foliage plants.
Is there a noticeable reduced yield from the variegated plants due to the reduced level of chlorophyl?

Lots of genetic drag involved in those genetics. I would speculate that flavor is going to suffer quite a bit. They are still intriguing plants!
