These kinds of onions, as well as walking onions are fascinating. I need to try growing some.

Sounds like you are so far. although I do plan on growing these sooner or later. Please keep us posted on what you think of the flavor and how well it grows and any problems you encounter, as we are counting on you to teach us about this.

DLD, I'm going to try these this year. Found a source, SESE. When did you plant yours?

They look just like scallions(green onions) to me.

I've only grown onions from seed in the past and was wondering whether these would be planted in the fall like garlic or spring like the onion sets. I'm excited about trying them. It'd be nice to have onions that held up well in storage!

Sellers only ship them for fall planting as far as I know, tho one gardener I talked to on a forum said I shouldn't be trying to overwinter them in my zone. Anyways, mine came in fall so I planted late fall, under a few layers of row cover for good measure. Curious myself!

I have Egyptian Walking Onions, and this is the second winter for them, they are doing well. I am letting them fill in a 4x8' bed. I have only tried the green onions for cooking, tastes like a green onion. In zone 6 they are doing fine. I would like to try potato onions, are they perennials like my Egyptians?

I don't think perennial is the word, cause here in MS. we plant them out at the same time garlic is and then dig them up when the tops die down in late spring.
