Well I've found that many of their tomatoes are advertised as San Marzano's grown outside Pompeii... but what about the cans that don't say?

You can see a picture here on this link to their website. I can't find anything that actually says what kinds of tomatoes they are though. www.cento.com/sanmarzano.html

Well, it is D.O.P. which means it has to have in it what it says and from where it says. And Italy is very serious about that status. I would guess that it is San Marzano tomatoes, like has been pointed out here previously, there are several similar varieties available on the market now, but, I would bet you would be as close as possible with the O.P indeterminate variety of San Marzano. It will not taste the same, by the way, unless you are growing them in San Marzano.

Thanks mulio,
I don't want to can them anyway... the whole point this year is to avoid canned tomatoes and the BPA that comes with them. We have a baby that will be eating them soon.
Anyway I'm interested in San marzanos. Only the true breeding/ open pollinated versions. I've found a few different ones online. Should I start a thread about this variety for the sake of clarity and search ease? Would anyone participate? I'd like to learn all I can about it.

Hortstu, go ahead and start the thread, I am not sure how much you can glean, but, most folks will have some experience hopefully.
