Well my cousin bought herself a house last summer and I told her my home-warming present would be for me to put in a mater / veggie patch for her for 2010. Well I got the call this spring and I went up and did the ground work (removing stumps and rocks and what have you). So last week, I was finally able to put in her plants: 4 tomatoes, 5 peppers, 2 cucumbers, and an herb patch She's thrilled - this was her first time ever planting a garden and I was proud to be a part of it. There aren't many younger people interested in "getting their hands dirty" - they rather play "Wii" or whatever - but I was glad to pass on an ages old tradition of farming your own vegetables. ~> Tom

Nice sized garden for a newbie. And a very generous housewarming gift! Those of us who have been gardening for 20 or 30 years or more tend to forget that not everyone knows how to start a garden or even improve on it. I got a call this morning about helping someone. Her garden is about 9sf. .She has two grape tomatoes (one red, one yellow) that I gave her, plus a hot pepper, a beefsteak tomato and a pumpkin plant that she purchased. She thought she should go buy bags of triple mix and fertilizer....But she does have a huge compost pile in her yard that they use for their ornamentals. I told her to save her cash, just add compost to her patch and I'll drop by later on in the week.

I know it - I've been "playing in the dirt" since I was a little kid and when someones interested, I pass on the knowledge I've learned my my father & his. I feel its very important to keep home gardens growing. I have 2 other friends whom I gave plants to this season and its their first time. However they said "I can make my own patch thanks": that's "dudes" for ya, lol Next, I going to teach her how to pay back the borrowed energy from the patch (via compost) and how to start her own seeds for spring. ~> Tom
