There's also gold speckling, same random pattern on the fruit but a different beast althogether. The "freckles" start out as black flecks on green unripe fruit (photo), and then mature to gold flecks on (in this case) red skinned fruit. It's heritable from one generation to another, though in F1 crosses I've had mixed results, perhaps like gs, a partial dominant. I have a F2 population that went out late - that might help tell the story. I was thinking it was the Gf (gold fleck) gene - but now not so sure. Attachments:

Now I'm speaking from memory, which is dangerous - but I recall that the skin had a rough texture. The gold freckles were definitely not imbedded below the skin, it was a surface feature. The previous photo is from last week on green unripe fruit, the new attached photo was the same line (Freckled Strawberry) from last year on ripe fruit. Now that I look at it again, it's a combination of gold flecks and scabs (think Scabitha). I'll watch fruit development a little more closely this year. gold flecking actually looks like small pieces of gold which shimmer in the light. They are usually just under the skin rather than on top. I was asking because I'll try to scan something for you which may be what you are seeing. Attachments:

OMG, although I've heard of gold speck as a physiological fruit disorder, I've never made the connection to what I have assumed is a genetic trait. see ucce.ucdavis.edu/files/datastore/234-518.pdf The phenotype described in this paper is spot on, so I must have a genotype that is stably susceptible to this condition. Pretty weird, but I guess one person's blemish is another person's beauty mark. It doesn't affect taste. |

I'll get some photos this summer. Early this morning I noticed that on my Freckled Strawberry plant the first fruit set are clean (without black specks) and the later fruit are very heavily freckled - that fits now that I know this is a physiological condition. I also noticed that F1's I made last year with FS have some freckling on later set fruit.
