Growing this for the first time this year. Had to try it. I was expecting a spitter from what I've heard but it is actually not bad. Probably the best tasting GWR cherry since the flavor of ARGGC has been falling off as it appears to stabilize from the first time i grew it a few years ago. The fruit is about the size of Black Cherry but maybe just ever so slightly smaller. From what I've read and now see for myself, it appears to be a bit unstable. Mine have clear skin. My understanding is it is normally yellow. May or may not be the so-called frosted version but that's not what I received from the vendor. I did manage to cross it with Black Cherry so hopefully it will improve on the flavor eventually.

I've only eaten Green Doctors once, and then just a handful of them, grown in Texas. I thought they had a distinctly grassy, not tomato-like, but maybe almost herbal flavor and thought instantly they would make good salsa verde with cilantro and lime juice.
The ones I ate had yellow skin, I do believe, and from what I can gather, the clear skin has a name attached to Green Doctors ... something like Ice ... whatever. Obviously whatever Galina's offshoot Green Doctors came from continues to segregate and recombine with results that both please and displease according to individual tastes.
I say try them and then figure out how to use them on the plate or what to breed them with to intensify flavor when combined with another variety.
Hell, I'd be happy to take some seeds for this clear skinned one, JayTee.

A clear skin version is called 'Green Doctors Frosted'.
I am growing the 'frosted' version this year to see what it is like. What I understand, the original Green Doctors has not been fully stable, as several folks reported clear skin variants when growing Green Doctors in 2009.
I have not re-grown much of my Green Doctors seeds to see if I get any variations in my seed stock, but I think it would be an interesting project to do in the future.

I am growing it this year as well and mine too have clear skin. One thing I noticed is that this little mater really cracks even after just a slight rainfall. But the taste is great, I think this is my favorite so far of the 20+ varieties I've tasted this year (still waiting for 20 more)

My 'Green Doctors Frosted' showed no cracking this summer - it is growing in a 7 gal pot outside. I finally picked the first few ripe fruits yesterday. Have not tasted it yet.

Folks,
The ones of you who are getting clear-skinned version, I am curious - where did you get your seed from?
(the reason I am asking is that I was only aware of three folks who had the 'Frosted' version last year - Jeff Casey, Neil Lockhart, and Carolyn Male (who I believe got the seed from Jeff and Neil).
Did you get a yellow-skinned version and got clear skin in your growouts?

I grew both Green Drs and Green Drs Frosted this year. My sources: Dr. Carolyn, and Neil L. Both varietys very productive and both had very good taste I found the G Drs Frosted to be sweet.
Also The ones I grew, Gr Drs when ripe had a yellowish bottom and the frosted was almost hard to tell when they became ripe. in fact they started splitting and rotting off before I knew they where ripe.

Here are a few of my Green Doctors pictures from Tatiana's TOMATObase, grown in 2009, for comparison. I agree it is hard to tell when Green Doctors Frosted is ripe.

Folks, The ones of you who are getting clear-skinned version, I am curious - where did you get your seed from? Did you get a yellow-skinned version and got clear skin in your growouts? Glenn at Sandhill sent me mine. No, I was expecting yellow skin but got clear. I'm sure it wasn't a mutation either. ;D

btw, I got my Green Doctors Frosted from Carolyn Male - I forgot to mention that. Maybe a little background might help? Amy Goldman found a green when ripe cherry from the variety Dr. Carolyn and she named it Green Doctors and seed has been available since about 2006 and it was quite stable until last year when Jeff Casey and Neil Lockhart independently found a clear skinned version which was then named Green Doctors Frosted. Most folks have no problem telling the normal GD from GD Frosted and I didn't b'c prior to that I'd trialed a variety for Tom Wagner called Verde Claro, which is also a clear skinned GWRipe. Adam Gleckler told me recently that a considerable number of the GD plants he put out this season were also clear skinned. So what's going on? First, not many had grown GD until recently. Second, there is a history of genetic instability that precedes GD going back to the variety Dr. Carolyn. I had saved seeds from Galina's Yellow and those saved seeds gave me plants, all RL, not PL, with different colored cherries, as in Salmon, pink, red and what I called ivory colored. At the same time Steve Draper in Utah at the time was also having instability problems with his Galina's. We both had gotten the Galina's seed from Bill MCDorman when he first offered it after returning from Siberia. Steve asked me to send the best of what I had, which was the ivory colored one which he named Dr. Carolyn. At first it threw some red fruited plants as well as some pink fruited plants, all cherries. The pink was sent to me by an SSE member who had named it Dr. Carolyn Pink. So going back to the origin, if you will, of GD and GD Frosted, there has been a theme of genetic instability from time to time. I like GD and I like GDFrosted and I and now many others prefer them to Green Grape or a couple of other GWRipe cherries that have been around. So what might GD or GD Frosted morph into in the future? I haven't the foggiest idea. ;D And yes, the GD Frosted seeds that I offered in my last free seed offer were donated from Jeff Casey and Neil Lockhart. Hope that helps. Carolyn
