Here are the results of my fiddling around this year.
F2 Lime Green Salad x Green Giant
18 dwarfs grown out (2 PL, 16 RL) Only two with decent flavor. two with clear epidermis (not the same two).
10 PL full size plants grown out, 6 with good to very good flavor, five with clear epidermis (all good flavor).
It seems like there might be some linkage of sweetness, PL and clear skin, and the linkage of the tart bad flavor to the dwarf gene. Hopefully some of the large good tasting plants will be heterozygous for dwarfism, and I can eventually sort out something interesting from this cross. It was neat to see a huge multiflora truss on a big beefsteak PL plant.
F1 Kosovo x Green Sausage --3 oz pointed plum with light striping, dry flesh, flesh flavor ok to bland, with good tangy gel. Fresh eating flavor OK, good for a paste. This line may have some promise, but the next line has the same genes and more.
F1 (Kosovo x [Lime Green Salad x Green Sausage]) --3 oz pointed plum, solid red, dry flesh turning soft when fully ripe, very sweet flesh, tangy gel, excellent flavor for fresh eating. This cross looks promising for many different directions.
F1 Debarao Gold x Green Sausage -3 oz finger, yellow w/ faint yellow stripes, Flesh dry with some flavor, tangy gell, compared to Roman Candle the flavor is more intense and less sweet. I made the cross trying to put Green Sausage-like fruit on a large plant, maybe I can get a good yellow paste out of it too. I like yellow sauce.
My F1 Brandywine x Black Krim (10 RL plants) mostly turned out to be Brandywine x unknown Pink RL. The flavor was similar to Brandywine. I did get two red fruited plants, with less flavor. S I didn't emasculate the flowers and just plastered BK pollen onto already open flowers thinking that would be good enough, but seedling PL:RL ratio indicated that mostly self pollination took place, and grow outs showed that most of the rest were bee crossed....Lesson learned.
