I received seeds in a holiday gift exchange last year. I didn't have much luck with the plants producing...Getting this garden in shape is a chore... But the two fruits that weren't stolen by furry little critters of bored by insects were quite beautiful. I brought them indoors green. By the time they ripened they were dry and mealy. But Paintman was struck by their beauty (no I didn't whip a tomato at him in a snit ). Anyone else have experience with this variety? What are your thoughts on taste and production? TY Oh..just realized it's a PL. Moving it to the PL Forum a good idea then?

Yes, I grew them and they looked great, you must let them rippen all the way or you have flavored wood.

That's about the size of it. But someone thought they would help me by pulling the tomato plants out of the garden. I mean just because we haven't had a frost yet, it's October and winter is coming...

Vintage Wine has been claimed by Tom Wagner to have been bred using one of his varieties, and done so by Sahin Seeds in the Netherlands.
Vintage Wine is not the same as Brandystripe when I look at the pictures of Vintage Wine.
About 16 years ago Tom sent me 22 varieties to trial and Brandystripe (regular PL) and Brandystripe (angora PL) were two of them.
To date, and I admit that I haven't participated at some of the other message sites, but I haven't seen a picture of what I'd say was Brandystripe. Visually beautiful but taste not good at all, which is why I think Tom recently crossed it with regular Brandywine and distributed seeds to a few folks of that cross.
I once had the list of the varieties that TOm initially sent to Kees Sahin, now deceased, but no longer have it, so I don't remember if Brandystripe was on that list. There was to be a second batch of seeds sent, but never were. This was a situation between Tom and Sahin Seeds that I had facilitated, but it never came to be.
But I can say that Vintage Wine is not the same as Brandystripe as I grew Brandystripe directly from Tom based on many pictures I've seen of Vintage Wine. Whether TOm did send Bandywstipe to Sahin Seeds and it was used to breed Vintage Wine is a possibility, said Carolyn choosing her words carefully.
Tom had asked me to not share seeds with anyone except Craig LeHoullier and all Craig trialed was Verde Claro. But in the past 16 years I kept my word with varieties such as Verde Claro, Chile Verde, Casady's Folly, the two Brandystripes, Christmas Tomato, Papa Grape and Saucy Green, which were the only ones I liked and saved seeds for and regrew in 2003. There may have been a few more I saved seeds for but yesterday PM I went through my seeds still on paper plates and those were the only one of Tom's that I found.
I do remember one was Orange Zebra but it was terrible, cracked all over the place, and no taste. And of course I wrote up reports on all of them and sent them back to Tom.
But now most of them are available via the SSE YEarbook or I think in some cases now at a seed site or two.I already have someone who has agreed to work with those 2003 seeds and after 16 years of keeping my word, it's currently my intention to have someone grow them out for me and be able to offer seed to lots of folks .
And yes, I do intend to contact Tom and tell him what I'm doing.
So if any of you think you have Brandystripe, please show me a picture and I can compare it to what I grew out for the two Brandystripes he sent me the seed for.

Here is Vintage Wine, a really pretty tomato but again, no taste. I am going to cross it with a couple better tasting vareties, hopefully to get the flavor up. And it would be nice to keep the looks, I will not cross to brandywine because I am not impressed with BW flavor.

Carolyn, The Tasteless mush formerly known as Vintage Wine, is in the compost. I saved the seeds from it so I could give it another go next summer. Tatianas Tomato Base shows Vintage Wine and Brandy Stripe as being the same?? tatianastomatobase.com/wiki/Vintage_Wine

Tania says that it came from one of the LINES of Brandystripe, not the variety Brandystripe, which indicates to me that Tom did send the PL reg leaf, not the angora one, to Kees as I've always assumed, and they crossed it with something to come up with Vintage Wine. So Vintage Wine and Brandystripe are not the same variety, but the former was no doubt developed from the latter. Now back to tennis, the WTA finals from Doha. ;D Carolyn

Oh, alright then. I'll go looking for striped maters with Good Reputations. I'll send you some COPIA to try. One of the better tasting striped ones I've grown here. I didn't really like the taste of Tigerella the yr I grew it. Bland, but it was a rainy yr here. And the striping on mine was kinda brownish. It wasn't very pretty. lol
