Since reading about the Grandpa Charlie & Grandpa Willie rivalry, one always striving to be better than the other, I thought I would start this thread so we all could write down our thoughts about such things we have noticed.
While separating, looking at under a magnifying glass, choosing, and sowing Grandpa Willie, and Grandpa Charlie seeds, I noticed that the Grandpa Charlie seeds were much bigger and healthier looking (IMO). Score 1 for Grandpa Charlie. {It must be noted that I am slightly biased toward Grandpa Willie since that was my grandfather's name.}

Looks like Charlie is ahead. And if you are into politics you can clearly see that one GC leans to the left, and one to the right.

The Willie- The Guard- and the Keeper- I have a great feeling about this one, it has the structure and growth rate of a true champion! Hope to see some Monsters on this one! That's awesome Blane. You could have your kid take a mater of each into show and tell, and explain the rivalry.

This popped up in my last batch of Grandpa Willie: I can't believe I did not notice it until I was potting up tonight: I was very careful when I sowed them so I know that I did not mix up any seed. Would these be considered "mitten thumb" leaves? sf? To my untrained eye this looks like a good example of one of those "in between" leaves, but it still looks like potato-leaf to me.

The seeds came from Dean. Does this mean that, one: It's a natural cross between Grandpa Willie x Unknown, or, two: that it is a stray seed? Dean? Spud?
I am half-tempted to grow out all 50+ seeds I have left to see what else is lurking in the annals of Spudster Mania.

williewoodpile, looks definitely Pl to me with a single and double mitten present on the plant. Good observation on your part...read the superb research that summerhawk did on leaf morphology. there is still a lot to learn on the different leaf forms of PLs....even he Master Spud is learning more every day. Best regards, Spud

Thanks Spud.
There is no doubt in my mind that Grandpa Charlie takes the lead right from the start: Better germination and better growth in the early stages. Of 5 Grandpa Charlie Seeds sown in the Bio-Dome, 4 of 5 sprouted. I culled two. Of 5 Grandpa Willie seeds sown in the BD, only 2 of 5 sprouted. I have two each of the first planting of GC & GW.
Of 10 Grandpa Charlie seeds sown in a 50 cell flat, 10 of 10 sprouted. All ten are doing just fine. Of 7 Grandpa Willie seeds sown in the 50 cell flat, 5 of 7 sprouted. All five seem to be doing okay, but not nearly as well as the Grandpa Charlie.

How did these guys end up next to each other? Well, about 500 ladies are coming through on a Garden Tour in July and I wanted to tell them about the rivalry...he, he, he.

Lookin' real good Blane.
Believe it or not it is Purple Haze that is kickin' butt here. It's growing faster and more tolerant to the up and down temperatures I am having right now. It had no transplant shock whatsoever. Neither Grandpa Willie or Grandpa Charlie have taken off yet. I think they are waiting for the sun to come out.

My Willies are starting to like the warmer weather that has rolled in! Next year I hope to obtain some Grandpa Charlie seeds to plant next to my Grandpa Willies! ;D Lookin' good Hawk. Mine are about the same size, or would be, but they took a couple of hits with moving, low temperatures, sun scald, and general idiocy associated with too many things going on at once.
