Stephen, the word purple was once used by many folks up to maybe about 1920 to indicate pink, not just dark pink but all shades of pink. So that's why you see so many varieties with the word Purple as part of the variety name and even those folks who introduced varieties more recently often use purple to mean pink. Other than the purple smudges seen on the original variety Purple Smudge and Orange Fleshed Purple Smudge, the only two varieties that I know that have anything resembling purple are Purple Calabash and Noire des Cosebeauf, and while the latter is especially beautiful with scalloped shoulders, I can't recommend either one to others based on taste, as I experience it; just too darn aggressive for me. Carolyn I understand that the purple used to mean pink, like prudence purple is a pink, but by description alone it is not a clear indicator of the tomatoes actual true color, kinda like people naming tomatoes golden when they are actually yellow. I really do not care what the name is as much its the descriptions that I think should be more simplified color wise. If we were to go by the thousands of colors Purple Calabash would actually be more of an Orchid color to me, Tatiana's list it as a purple/brown/pink fruit with green shoulders, which to me is a more accurate and simpler way to describe it. I think that is all we are saying. I agree with you completely that descriptions of a vaariety should relect its traits, regardless of the name. But we can't go back to the last century and fault those who did use the word purple to mean pink, b'c what was, was. As for Purple Calbash, i have no problem with some folks seeing it differently than others b'c growing conditions and weather can certainly influence color as well. Same for Noire des Cosebeauf . Again, this can also be changed, and should be for more accurate records. And, this is now, it isnt in stone we must follow the sheep over the edge of the cliff. You can not change history however you can shape the future. I have MANY people who agree and will now be using the new terminology when describing tomato color. The names will be kept as accurate as possible, this is not asking alot, and the end result will be beneficial. This will catch on and spread.

I do see your point on the purple thing however it is a better description than black. Since no one person is "The Man" or "Matriarch" Change will come through constant use and evolution. And of course skin color will be mentioned and therefore if need be..explained. I dont see that as a factor unless one is a breeder, and wants to nit pick.

ROFLMAO JT. Do you even remember what this thread started off being about? Oh Wait...Something about People. Female ones obviously, since it morphed into a discussion about Tomatoes... Righto! (First of all, this forum is for ALL tomato people weather you grow 2 or 2000.) ...is what Dean said in his first post. So once we got past the "all are encouraged to post" posts, then it slid down into what the Forum is mainly about......as in The Tomato Garden. ;D Carolyn Read more: thetomatogarden.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=782&page=1#ixzz14204CUwj

It is only appropriate that this thread has evolved into a discussion of tomato colours, and it is definitely better to base the names on perception rather than science. Now if only the thread title could reflect that? BTW, what shall we do about human hair colours, because there are definitely no red hair, and rather some orange?

Well, somethings do morph, granted, buy my intention was to welcome new tomato people then for some strange reason somebody fired up with the G word and it was on!! Anyway, it has been an enlightening thread!! Lope, you oly say that because you prolly bred tomatoes with those exact colors.

What shall we do about human hair colours, because there are definitely no red hair, and rather some orange? Probably no one chimed in on this, because BLRH would settle it. Shooting someone's dog is a lot safer.

Yeah Gunnar, since we would have to peel her skin off and hold it up to the light to see the pigment...LOL ;D

Need the little ROLF smiley added. ;D
I need to go back up and copy the proposed color chart down and save it. I am one of these not so up on the different cultivars of tomatoes. When I first bought the Garden Peach, I thought it would be a peach color. Didn't get that. When I have bought ones that said purple, I have gotten different shades of red.
I remember having to throw out a bunch of tomatoes, because I kept waiting for them to turn white like whitewash bright white and didn't realize they only went to a sort of what I call pale yellow color.
Now while I do like the 8 colors, I do enjoy when somebody puts like red/reddish brown.
